WIne Story – Dr. Josef Kohr
The Köhr family has been operating their winery in the town of Ruppertsberg, located in the Palatinate region, for centuries. They have records of theirvineyards dating back to 1648. Ruppertsberg is famous for its stunning views, ancient archaeological finds and viticulture. The family's vineyards aresituated in significant areas like Reiterpfad, Nußbien, Linsenbusch, andHoheburg. The climate in the Mittelhaardt terroir is favorable for growing grapesas it gets around 2100 hours of sunshine and just 516 mm of precipitation. Thismakes it the perfect location to produce Rieslings, which are known for theirmaximum ripeness, intense varietal aroma, and moderate acidity.
Dr. Josef Köhr is a fascinating wine grower who hassuccessfully incorporated new trends in winemaking into a traditional winery. Underhis guidance, the winery has diversified its production to focus on wines thatdepart from the traditional German varieties. In addition to Riesling, thevineyard cultivates several French grape varieties, such as Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, and has made significant advancements in aging their wines in oak barrels. The German Agricultural Society has recognized their wines in 2020, 2021, and 2023, and some of their wines are suitable for vegans.
